Midweek holiday itinerary
Please note: this route itinerary takes you East of Honeystreet. You can also head West which will take you as far as Devizes. You won't have much time to navigate Caen Hill Flight so it's best to turn at Devizes - A lovely route if you're just after a relaxing few days with no locks!
Honeystreet to Wilcot/Pewsey - LOCKS 0 / MILES 3.5 - 4.5 / TIME 1 - 2 HOURS
Arrive for your 15:00 handover at Honeystreet Wharf to meet your instructor. Cruise 1 - 2 hours East to the picturesque village of Wilcot (bridge 117). Here you can enjoy a meal at The Golden Swan pub. Alternatively, travel half an hour further to Pewsey - our local village which has a variety of shops and restaurants. The Waterfront Bar and Bistro is a canalside restaurant renowned for it's lovely fish specials and guest ales. For something different head into Pewsey for a fantastic curry at Tale of Spice - a popular Indian resturant where you can take away or eat in.
Wilcot/Pewsey to Crofton - LOCKS 10 / MILES 7 / TIME 4 - 5 HOURS
Continue for 4 - 5 hours East through beautiful Wiltshire countryside. Moor up at Crofton to visit the Crofton Beam Engines and Cafe. Explore the workings of the oldest working steam engines in the world - that are still going strong today! (Open 10:30 - 16:30 every day except Mondays). Crofton is the highest point on the canal. Why not head off for a walk through glorious countryside to Wilton Windmill - stunning hilltop views! Have dinner at The Swan Inn surrounded by thatched cottages and a village pond.
Crofton to Great Bedwyn (turn around here) - LOCKS 2 / MILES 1.5 / TIME 2 HOURS
Head off in the morning for a leisurely 2 hours East to moor overnight at Great Bedwyn and turn around at the turning point just before bridge 93, ready to head back West in the morning. There are two pubs in the village, The Cross Keys and The Three Tuns. For something special walk East for roughly 30 minutes to The Harrow at Little Bedwyn - a beautiful Michelin starred restaurant close to the canal.
Great Bedwyn to Pewsey/Wilcot - LOCKS 14 / MILES 8.5 / TIME 6 - 7 HOURS
Head back towards Honeystreet. We would recommend continuing at least as far as Pewsey so that there's no rushing around on Friday morning.
Pewsey/Wilcot to Honeystreet - LOCKS 0 / MILES 3.5 - 4.5 / TIME 1 - 2 HOURS
Head back to Honeystreet in the morning, ready to depart your boat at 10:00am. It'll take you up to 2 hours from Pewsey. If you would prefer to moor back at the Wharf on Thursday night that's not a problem.
NB: The route suggested above is an example. If you're an ambitious crew, why not aim to travel a little further to Froxfield. For those of you wanting a less active holiday, plan to turn-around at Crofton. For a short break we highly recommend heading East. The reason for this is to avoid Caen Hill Flight of locks, located 4.5 hours West of us near Devizes. It's a fantastic part of the canal to navigate, however this staircase of locks will take up the majority of a day to navigate, so heading East maximises the distance you can travel during your weekend hire. It's best to take a boat for at least a week heading in this direction.
